Vets-Leishmaniosis
Having adopted our wonderful former street dog, Livi, from the Greek island of Zakynthos – who had been tested and cleared of leishmaniasis – our vet referred us to Charlie (The Skin Vet) when we noticed patches of dry skin & hair loss appearing on her face & legs which the vet could not explain or treat. Charlie explained that leishmaniasis can remain dormant in dogs for years & set about attempting to obtain a diagnosis – which proved tricky as Livi’s condition was in such early stages. He was ultimately proved right & subsequently oversaw Livi’s treatment, recovery & ongoing health & wellbeing through medication, diet & regular testing. We are very grateful to Charlie for his knowledge of & expertise in this relatively little-known (in the UK) condition, and for always being so helpful and approachable.

Six months after rescuing ‘Luna’ from Serbia, she started to show skin irritation. Fast forward two years later and many, many, many different treatments from various vets I was at my wits end. ‘Luna’ was getting progressively worse with scratching, her fur falling out and I could see she was uncomfortable. She was very bad tempered with other dogs (which, incidentally, I did not relate to her skin condition – I thought it was linked to her being a nervous rescue dog).
One week after ‘Luna’s appointment the improvement in her is unbelievable. She has never had such a full, glossy coat and the best bit is that, now she is no longer uncomfortable, her behaviour has improved. I am aware that she may have a flare up, but the fact that she has improved by 100% rather than progressively getting worse is amazing.
I highly recommend Charlie Walker. He explains all the procedures and tests precisely and his interest in the skin condition is heart-warming as I know he is taking ‘Luna’s symptoms seriously. My only regret is that I only found out about him recently. Thank you, Charlie for all your help.

We consulted Charlie Walker, The Skin Vet, with our 2yr old Greek rescue dog, Leo, who had been suffering with a progressive skin condition which had not responded to the usual treatments. At our first consultation Charlie suggested a possible diagnosis of Leishmaniasis, a potentially fatal parasitic condition common in Mediterranean Europe, but not seen in British-born dogs and therefore not commonly seen by British vets. Clinical tests quickly confirmed the diagnosis and Charlie recommended a treatment which was known to be effective, but not licensed for use in Britain. He quickly organised for a special licence which would allow us to obtain and use this medication, which he also sourced for us. Charlie even managed to find a way to help us recoup some of the cost of medication after treatment.

I’ve been hearing much more about Demodex (gatoi) in cats since your case study at the BVDSG! I have had several reports of vets including demodicosis in their differential (diagnose)s now when they see itchy cats (mostly dermatologists, but it seems to be filtering down to GP’s too). One vet today asked me, when we were speaking about Stronghold Plus, if it treated Demodex. I informed her of your case study and she was very interested!”

Our nine-year-old cocker spaniel, Cassie, was diagnosed with Pemphigus (Foliaceus). The severity of the condition was such that we really thought we would lose her. Having been referred to Charlie she was seen within a week and treatment commenced a few days later. The transformation was truly astonishing. After just one pulse treatment and three months later her skin is perfect and hair regrowth is almost complete. Charlie’s service is second to none. We cannot speak highly enough about Charlie Walker – his professionalism, endless patience and understanding are second to none. We had been struggling with what we thought was a skin allergy on ‘Mickey’, our Siamese cat and had been backwards & forwards to our Vet for more than a year trying to identify the cause. In desperation … we asked for an emergency referral, and that was when we first met Charlie.
Once he had seen us and ‘Mickey’, Charlie very quickly carried out all the necessary tests and biopsies, & as he suspected from the outset ‘Mickey’ had Pemphigus Foliaceus. In 40 years of breeding Siamese cats we had never heard of this – it is a horrible disease, at our worst point ‘Mickey’ was falling to bits before our eyes. His face, head & ears were covered in angry scabs and sores, and the fur was peeling off. Walking was clearly uncomfortable due to the outbreaks between his toes, & he was licking and biting furiously at his back and the base of his tail – to see him like this was heart breaking.
Not only did Charlie have to deal with a very poorly cat, he also had to calm frantic owners! He became our ‘action man’, immediately drawing up ‘Mickey’s ‘recovery plan’, explaining in detail all the ins & outs of the condition, and the medications he would prescribe to get it under control. It was a long haul, but Charlie was always available to reassure us when we were at melt down point – thanks to his dedication and care ‘Mickey’ is a happy cat again, his skin has healed & his fur eventually grew back. We know there is no cure for his condition but Charlie has taught us how to control it, & what to do if Mickey suffers a relapse. We can never thank you enough Charlie.

Our dog ‘Neko’ saw Charlie as an emergency appointment when he started to suffer from an acute & extreme skin condition. The (Douxo S3 Seb) products are so fantastic. Literally everyone says how amazing ‘Richmond’s coat is. Little ‘Lottie’ who is a long-haired dachshund had a phenomenal coat due to the regular (Douxo S3 Care) version. Honestly, so many people ask what I use as she’s so ludicrously soft, silky, has no ‘doggy’ smell etc. The products are incredible!
